Adult Day Care Website

Apollo

Overview

I designed the user interface and developed the front-end of the home page for the Apollo Adult Day Care Program website, a behavior management and community-based program that works with adults who have intellectual and behavioral challenges. This was the very first project I was a part of. Luckily for me, a close family friend runs his own design agency and has been in the product design industry for many years. He was nice enough to bring me onto this project while I was in the beginning stages of learning product design.

Process

Since this was the very first project I had the opportunity to work on, I did not necessarily have a set process to follow so I had to rely on my project manager to guide me through the design process for the first time. This is where I learned the design process I continue to follow to this day.

Product Definition: Define the challenge and goals. Interview experts and users. Create a journey map.

  • Interview Apollo CEO to understand what the company needs for the website.
  • Interview Apollo employees and clients to help understand the company itself.
  • Create a journeymap of all possible user journeys through the new website.

Concept Exploration: Perform competitive analysis. Come up with ideas for solutions based on a variety of research methods. Create wireframes, storyboards, and mockups.

  • Study other adult day care program websites and to discover solutions that work best for Apollo and their clients.
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, and mockups of potential solutions based on information gathered from research.

Iteration & Improvement: Design and build prototypes using Figma. Test prototypes with real users and stakeholders. Reiterate and improve prototypes based on user and stakeholder feedback.

  • Design working prototypes of the solutions based on previous research.
  • Test prototypes with C.E.O., employees, and clients.
  • Reiterate and improve prototypes based on the feedback and data gathered from previous tests.

Execution: Create and launch the live product using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Previous Iterations
Challenges

Since Apollo Adult Day Care Program did not yet have a website, the challenges to creating the website for Apollo primarily involved discovering what was most important for the company and understanding what had to be included in the website.

  • According to the C.E.O., some of the most important things the website needed to do was be able to gather donations, create appointments, and take messages so I decided to make those things available right on the home page.
  • Through interviews I learned that real images of the facility and client testimonials were significant factors that persuaded potential clients to choose certain programs to attend so I made sure to add these to the home page.

Conclusion

I was intimidated and unsure of myself at first before starting this project because I was given more ownership and responsibility on this project than I expected. After completing this project and overcoming different challenges with the help and guidance of my project manager I feel confident that my skills improved dramatically and I am excited to put those improved skills to use in future projects.
